Dear reader,
Corporate do-goodism — and especially environmental, social and governance (ESG) investing — has been under a lot of fire lately.
In Europe, asset managers braced themselves for a wave of ESG fund downgrades. In America, an anti-ESG crusade, worsened by politics, reached peak momentum when calls for prominent businessman and Blackrock's chief Larry Fink to step down escalated, amid criticism of ESG "hypocrisy".
In fact, this year hasn’t been good for ESG advocates.
On the whole, however, ESG principles are still being valued, with corporates trying to walk the talk. In Asia, firms in fast-growing markets such as India and China are making their debut on a global sustainability benchmark. There are calls for more disclosure, not less. The concern is that companies will shy away from communicating their sustainability policies, for fear of backlash.
This week, our correspondent, attending shipping decarbonisation talks in London, also sent back a despatch. In the spotlight: Asia’s seafarers — who number the highest in the world and are in need of training with stricter green shipping targets on the horizon.
Looking back at an eventful year, here are 10 stories Eco-Business covered that caught our readers' attention.
And a list of sustainability wins — just to add a dash of optimism before we close the year! |
